Velez Malaga is located 26km East of Malaga and has a population of approximately 60,000 inhabitants. It is considered to be the centre and capital of The Axarquia region and is situated 1km inland from Torre del Mar. It is the centre for the agricultural region and produces the muscatel grapes used to make the famous Malaga wine. The word Axarquia comes from the Arab word for East, as it's is East of Malaga City. This area has managed to maintain its clean and unspoilt beaches and has escaped form the development the rest of the coast has suffered from. The region has managed to keep its quiet and quaint feel about it and many of the villages have remained unchanged for years. The countryside is made up of deep valleys which still have terraces and irrigation channels dating back to the Moorish times. Many of the country's crops are grown in this sub-tropical climate. The region is an area of contrast from the high and spectacular mountains to the clean and sandy beaches on the coast.
Even though Velez Malaga is very close to the costal area of Costa del Sol, it has remained relatively unaffected by the boom in tourism and remains a working town.
The main industry for the area is Avocados, Olives, Excellent quality Wine as well as various citrus plantations which provide employment for the local population.
The town benefits from a rich history dating back to Phoenician Carthaginians times with lovely architecture and many historical buildings to be found.
Velez Malaga was also an important town under Roman and Moorish rule.
Velez Malaga is located where the Guaro and Benamargosa Rivers meet and join to make the Velez River. The river played a big part in the town's history and is one of the reasons for the fertile soils in the fields that surround it.
Some of the most important historical monuments found in the town are the Royal Convent of Santiago and the 13th Century Moorish hill top fortress called La Fortaleza. The town also has parts of the Moorish town walls still in existence and the Teatro del Carmen offers visitors a chance to watch local music concerts and contemporary dance concerts.
Towns and villages in La Axarquia include: Algarrobo, Sayalonga, Torrox, La Vinuela, Canillas de Aceitunos, Iznate and a number of other villages which have become increasingly popular among foreigners to relocate to due to their rich traditions, spectacular views and un spoilt natural surroundings.
Inland you can still horses and donkeys being used as a form of transport and village sun touched by progress, whilst just a short drive away on the coast is the hustle and bustle of the coast, where you can experience a great nightlife.
Spanish Rural Property remains considerably lower than on the coast as well as the cost of living being lower.
Many house hunters in Spain have chosen the nearby countryside and have found lovely villas for sale in La Axarquia. Many home buyers have settled in particular areas of La Axarquia such as La Vinuela and Comares just to mention a couple. The village of Comares is perched high up on the mountain with terrific views over the Mediterranean coastline. There are a good range of traditional townhouses for sale in Comares as well as villas for sale on the outskirts of Comares. La Vinuela is located inland some 20 or so minutes from the coastal road. The main focal point is Vinuela Lake which is a large reservoir. Property prices in La Vinuela remain competitive even though in the past few years many expats flocked and bought property in La Vinuela. There are some great villas for sale in La Vinuela, some even have views over Lake Vinuela!!!.
