The Natural Park Sierra Subbetica was declared a Regional Park in 1988 covering an area of 122 square miles or 316 square kilometres.
The range of the park rises to a height of 1,570 metres above sea level at the lime Stone Summit of La Tinosa which is just seven kilometres from the beautiful town of Priego de Cordoba.
The area boasts a plentiful supply of underground water which comes to the surface at numerous springs and streams and supports a variety of vegetation and trees.
Wild life also flourishes in the park which includes Golden Eagles and other birds of prey. The park is also home to many different types of mammals, the most unusual and rare member is the red toothed shrew.
The limestone uplands provide superb walking areas with wooded slopes and rocky gauges.
The villages and small towns within the Subbetica are all whitewashed and many of them still have the remains of a Moorish Castle or other sites of historical interests.
Carcabuey, Zuheros, Luque, Zagrilla and Almedinilla stand out as being the most interesting and picturesque locations. There are 14 towns altogether in the Subbetica ranging in size of population, Zuheros has the smallest with just 400 to the largest, Lucena with 40 000 people living there.
The name Subbetica derives from the Roman Area of Betica which roughly corresponds to the modern Andalucia. Remains from this Roman period can be found in numerous places, the most notable being in the village of Almedinilla where the remains of an extensive villa complex are still visible to this day.
Many years after the Moors had left the area in the 17th and 18th century the craftsmanship in the Subbetica developed and flourished again. Even to this day the area still produces crafts and products such as woodwork, pottery, stone, bronze and jewelry for locals and visitors to buy.
Olive oil is the main economy of the Subbetica. The Oil produced in this area often wins the best in Spain award and other international awards.
The Subbetica Cordobesa lies in what is considered to be the geographical centre of Andalucia and is equidistant from the major cities in the region.
