Spain is a land of festivals with any given day of the year celebrating a fiesta somewhere in the country! The whole country of Spain experiences extremes of temperature and generally low rainfall except in the North. In the South of the country the climate is sub-tropical and in Malaga in the winter the average winter temperature is 14 degrees Centigrade.
One third of the countries land is cultivated, the two main agricultural products being grapes for wine production and olives used for olive oil. Other products grown in Spain are oranges, cereal grains, vegetable and root crops. The two main livestock animals farmed in Spain are sheep and goats. Spain is also rich in minerals with gold and silver mined in parts of the country. Some of the other minerals mined are coal, iron ore and copper, also Spain has a reserve of natural gas.
Cork-oak trees make a high proportion of Spanish forest and in the late 1980's 52,000 tons of cork were exported. Spain also has a well developed fishing industry as the waters around the country are well stocked with a large variety of fish. The main manufactured goods that Spain produces are textiles, iron, steel and motor vehicles. It is also one of the world's leading producers of wine production.
In the last few years over 31% of Spain's labour force were employed in manufacturing, mining and construction.
The tourist industry also accounts for a lot of employment in Spain and in 2002 78 million tourists visited the country. Spain is ranked third in the world's most visited countries just behind USA and France.
The history of Spain dates back to the cave paintings at Altamira from 15,000 BC. The country has been occupied by Phoenicians, Romans and Moors. The country was reconquested by the Roman Catholic monarchy, banishing the Moors form the country. The Spanish monarchy ruled for many centuries after this, through the Civil War right up to 1930 when Franco took over power in the country. This occupation continued until 1955 when King Juan Carlos took back power.
Spain became a popular tourist destination after budget airlines made it more accessible and affordable. With its sub-tropical climate and sun bleached beaches Spain soon became a tourist magnet. Spain offers visitors a huge variation in one country.
