Sotogrande is a relatively new urbanization in the region of the Campo de Gibraltar and in the province of Cadiz; a little over an hour west of Malaga city and some 15 to 20 minutes from Gibraltar. The urbanization of Sotgrande started off when Joseph McMicking decided to build a golf club on land near the mouth of the Guadiaro River in 1964.
Sotogrande offers some of the most upmarket tourist facilities and real estate. It was originally a Site of Exceptional Natural Beauty and development started in the area in the 1960's
The first golf course built in the area, designed by architect Robert Trent Jones, led to the development of housing for its users. In subsequent years an infrastructure would be built that made it more attractive to development. Thus, the Polo Club and the La Playa Hotel Sotogrande Tennis were built, both in 1965.
The movement to Sotogrande of citizens from many different countries gradually increased its population as well as its popularity resulting in the need for better facilities and better infrastructure.
The port/ marina in Sotogrande opened in 1987 as a branch of the Algeciras Bay Port Authority, it specializes in luxury watercraft and it is located on the right bank of the river next to the Guadiaro Natural Estuary River.
The ecological impact of the new port was the disappearance of the dune system and the Torreguadiaro beach which naturally had an impact on the way the delta functioned.
In 1995, numerous citizens of the parish and nearby settlements requested the completion of the legal formalities for the segregation of Sotogrande, Guadiaro, Guadiaro de Pueblo Nuevo, San Enrique de Guadiaro Torreguadiaro and San Roque as a new town called Valle Guadiaro, this request was denied under Decree 312/1996.
Today Sotogrande has five major golf courses, among which includes Golf Valderrama, famously known for hosting the Ryder Cup in 1997 and considered to be one of the best courses in Europe as well as Polo facilities.
The Santa Maria Club hosts some of the world top polo players and the local marina is often the first port of call for boats as they enter the Mediterranean. The marina has berths for as many as 600 yachts, up to 72 metres long.
There are less exclusive facilities available for visitors including fitness centres, swimming pools and beach clubs.
The more upmarket beach club El Octagon offers visitors adult-only area, bars and swimming pools. It also is a very safe location to try new water sports in a warm and sunny environment.
Sotogrande is the biggest resort and privately owned residential area in Andalucia. It offers house buyers a chance to purchase a property in a more upmarket area with fantastic facilities nearby.
