During the 8th century BC, a city was developed on the shores of the Guadalquivir River, the city was called Ispal. This name later changed to Hispala and is thought to be the origins of Seville. Seville was born and grew where the river becomes no longer navigable for seagoing ships.
During the Roman occupation, Seville flourished and this growth continued after the region was taken over by the Moors. In 1248 Fernando III recaptured Seville for Christianity and during this period numerous new churches were built. In 1401 the Gothic style Cathedral was built over the Big Mosque. Seville continued to grow and developed over the centuries and is still a thriving and bustling city to this day. There was a chain attached form the bottom of the tower across the river to stop boats coming up the river into the port. Also the University of Seville was built on the site of first tobacco factory in Europe.
