San Pedro de Alcantara's roots are of an ancient farming community and famous for sugar cane.
The modern San Pedro came about in the 1860s with the creation of a new agricultural colony. Today San Pedro is a refreshingly unspoilt pueblo with great appeal due to its facilities, location and charm as a typical Spanish Pueblo with an influx of foreigners.
Those interested in the History behind San Pedro will enjoy the Paleochristian Balisilica Church by the sea and the third century Roman Baths known as Las Bovedas. Las Bovedas is an octagonal shaped building which had one central room with 7 rooms off it.
If you head for the central plaza, you will find the parish church and surrounding narrow streets which are packed with intriguing small shops as well as sidewalk cafes and bars. Thursday is street market day with all the associated hustle and bustle; undoubtedly this is a bargain shopper's paradise.
From the town centre, the beach is only a short and pleasant walk via the Avenida del Marques del Duero which is an attractive wide avenue lined by palm trees. The modern wide promenade is ideal for continuing your walk (or for skateboarding!) with numerous beachside restaurants specialising in fish dishes. Visit Bora Bora if only for a drink at the bar. It is one of the best beach clubs on the coast, with a superb restaurant and all the usual beach facilities, in other words, a tropical paradise.
The San Pedro Feria is the last in the circuit and normally runs in October,
