The resort that is today known as Puerto Banus was discovered in the 1940s by Ricardo Soriano Marquis of Ivansei, the Marquis of Salamanca and Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe. They were leaders in the high society of the day and they enjoyed the warm climate, low population density with paradise like conditions were they could relax. In the early 1960s Jose Banus saw the potential in the area, as real estate began to flourish. Initially he bought a large area of land and had intended to build a large cattle breeding farm to produce bulls for the popular sport of bull fighting in Spain.
During the late 60s and early 70s he had a vision of building a luxurious resort for the rich and famous and this dream included an idea for a large marina.
At this time two architects Noldi Schreck who was from Switzerland and Marcos Sainz who originated from Mexico moved to the area. They met up with Jose Banus and he shared his ideas of developing the upmarket resort and large port. After this initially meeting, the pair spent time travelling around Andalucia getting inspiration from the architecture and buildings in the area. The design for Puerto Banus very much reflected the local Andalucian culture whilst still displaying a modern touch. They designed the now famous El Club de Playa and the marina complex which was opened in May 1970. The marina complex included numerous berths for large yachts, luxurious apartments and bars and restaurants. This was now the place to be seen in and was seen as the jewel in the crown of Marbella. Many rich and famous people were seen enjoying the beautiful and luxurious surroundings, a far cry from the little fishing village that Marbella once was.
These visitors included Prince Renoi, Princess Grace of Monaco and Hugh Heffner. The marina was full of luxury yachts confirming that the faith of its creator Jose Banus was well placed. King Fahd of Saudi Arabia also chose Marbella to build his summer house and he moored his large luxury yacht Shaf in Puerto Banus.
Since then Puerto Banus has continued to grow and develop a now includes such retail giants as El Corte Ingles, real estate companies companies and many companies have chosen to locate here in this prestigious location. Puerto Banus whilst keeping its upmarket status has become more accessible to the rest of the public. The marina is surrounded by a mixture of designer shops, restaurants and bars.
