Can we help you with your search for property in Nerja?
Nerja is situated 50km East of Malaga City accessed via the N340 and sits on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. What was once a sleepy fishing village, today has a population of approximately 22,000 inhabitants and for many years has been a magnet for tourists interested in the history and the beauty of Nerja as well as the 16 km of sandy beaches. However, Nerja seems to have escaped relatively unscathed from the amount of development which the Western Costa del Sol saw between the late 90's up to 2005/6.
The jewel in Nerja's crown has to be El Balcon de Europa (The Balcony of Europe); this is the promenade along the cliff where an impressive Moorish Castle once stood with amazing views over the Mediterranean Sea as well as coves and sandy beaches below.
The caves in Nerja which have made the town famous throughout Europe are located 3 km from the town itself, it is an incredible attraction which brings people from all over Europe to see the incredible paintings said to be over 20,000 years old as well as other prehistoric remains. One of the largest caves has been converted into a concert hall where you can watch performances during the summer. The series of potholes that link the caves together go back many miles beyond Nerja towards Granada.
The Romans conquered the town and named it Detunda and the Arabs renamed it Narixa which means abundant spring. The town was a key location in the region for growing various agricultural products and silk products due to the fertile soil in the area. Sugar cane was also grown in the area until recently when semi-tropical fruits such as mango and papaya replaced it.
Nerja is located near the Sierra de Almijara at the far east of the Costa del Sol. Next to the Balcon de Europa is the Playa del Salon which is a quiet beach where you can still see original fishermen's cottages. This area is unspoilt untouched by the large development seen further down the Costa del Sol.
Leaving Nerja driving a few miles inland is the village of Frigiliana, unchanged despite the large influx of visitors and foreigners. The village has retained its charm and its winding streets are filled by flower pots and old peool sitting outside watching the world go by. Like Nerja, Frigiliana's settlements go back to Neolithic times, the village having been conquered by different invaders. Also like Nerja, Frigiliana has attracted many foreign visitors however these two places are worlds apart. Frigiliana offers a quiet village retreat for visitors and residents alike whilst Nerja offers a more cosmopolitan lifestyle with great amenities.
