The town of Mollina whose name derives from Torre Mollina (somewhat similar to Torremolinos or from the Roman name Mollis which means bland, it is situated 15km north west of Antequera and it is said that it has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Four kilometres out of town are the ruins of Castellum of Santilla which was a Roman settlement built around a Roman Villa. It was approximately 1400 metres square and was reinforced during the upheaval of the Roman Empire. The village of Mollina dates from the more peaceful 16th Century reconquest of the area by Spanish troops. The land was shared out for farmers between the victors. Mollina developed in the area around the Convent de la Ascunsion rather than the usual development round a fortified encampment. During the peak of the agricultural growth Mollina grew so much in the production of olives that the parish church was renamed Nuestra Senora de la Oliva. Mollina gained independence from Antequera at the beginning of the 19th Century.
The past few years has seen a large influx of foreigners coming to Mollina and purchasing property in Mollina, its accessibility from the A92 dual carriageway has made it a very attractive proposition for those wishing to settle in a typical and traditional village in inland Andalucia yet within close proximity to the Costa del Sol as well as easy access to Granada, Cordoba and Seville.
The village/ town of Mollina has a population of approximately 3,000 inhabitants with all amenities on site such as bars, supermarkets, health centre and an English Bookshop and an English Food shop. Mollina produces 80% of the wine in Malaga province and of course can be bought in any local shop at a very reasonable price, anyone visiting Mollina is strongly recommended to try the Mollina Wine as well as the local Mollete which is a local type of bread.
There are several festivals held in the town, the first being in May which is the Romeria. The town's feria takes place in the second week of August and the most important of all is the wine harvest festival which is in the second week of September.
The new Antequera Airport which is being constructed approximately 15 minutes away from Mollina promises to bring many businesses as well as business opportunities to the area, the airport is scheduled to open in 2013 and a range of low cost airlines are looking like very likely candidates to be using Antequera airport as well as the other well established airports.
One urbanisation which was built in the past few years in Mollina is Bellavista which is located on the outskirts of Mollina yet within easy walking distance to amenities. Bellavista is an urbanisation consisting of spacious and well designed townhouses some with direct open views to Antequera.
