What is today the municipality of La Linea de la Concepcion was part of Gibraltar in the Kingdom of Seville, from its recapture of the Nazari Kingdom of Granada by the Crown of Castile in the fifteenth century until the English invasion in the early eighteenth century.
La Linea de La Concepcion is situated in the Campo de Gibraltar in the province of Cadiz. Accessed from the N340 or AP7 it takes just over an hour from Malaga depending on which route you take. According to 2008 records, the population was of over 64,000 inhabitants in an area covering 26 km2, equivalent to 2470 inhabitants per km2. It is situated at 5 metres above sea level and 134 kilometres from the provincial capital Cadiz.
La Linea de La Concepcion or La Linea as it is better known, provides the access from mainland Spain to Gibraltar, during the period of time in which Anglo/ Spanish relations were not at their best, inhabitants from Gibraltar had to go via North Africa to enter into Spanish territory, this has changed drastically with people from Gibraltar and La Linea travelling to and from on a daily basis and in many cases the crossing is for work or business purposes. The crossing from La Linea into Gibraltar has over the past years become easier, however, documentation still must be produced at the border and a limit on quantities and value of goods still remains.
La Linea boasts comprehensive facilities for its residents and numerous developments have been constructed not necessarily in La Linea itself but within close proximity. As you approach La Linea it has a distinct industrial feel to it, particularly as you pass through the area of Campamento which is between San Roque and La Linea, once you have gone past this area, it seems to open into a lovely city with sandy beaches and a relaxed atmosphere.
The centre of La Linea is full of life; the main square is lined with outdoor cafes, where locals and visitors enjoy a quiet coffee.
La Linea is also a place where many people live as an alternative to Gibraltar as it is a much cheaper alternative and is only a short walk to the border and many of its 60 000 inhabitants commute to Gibraltar everyday.
One of the main tourist attractions in La Linea is Parroquia de la Inmaculada, which is a 19th Century colonial style church. There is also a pretty port in La Linea, it has two beaches and in the old quarters there are many churches and bars. There is also a weekly market where stalls sell from antiques to clothes. The town also has its own bullring which still holds regular bullfights.
Nearby to La Linea is the town and port of Duquesa, popular with ex-pats due to its close proximity to Gibraltar and its very good value for money properties. Despite its closeness to Gibraltar it's only a 20 minute drive from the resort of Marbella. The port of Duquesa has many facilities including full marina services and a wealth of bars and restaurants. Duquesa also has miles of unspoilt beaches, many of which have a blue flag.
Overall both La Linea and Duquesa are great location to visit or buy due to its location and still low property prices.
