The town or village of Iznajar is located near the southerly border of the Cordoba province and has a population of over 5,000 inhabitants including surrounding villages and hamlets. It is on the edge of the Subbetica Natural Park and sits in the Rio Genil valley.
Iznajar is located next to a man-made reservoir which can be compared to an inland sea which is 30km long and straddles into Western Granada province, it is said to contain 900 million cubic metres of water, formerly, this was an Olive Grove.
This Inland Andalucian sea is a magnet from non-motorised water sports and fishing and is a peaceful place for families to relax and enjoy the beautiful countryside.
In many parts of Iznajar the streets are narrow and steep and are a reminder of its origins predating motorized vehicles!
The town dates back to a prehistoric Iberian settlement but really developed during the Moorish invasion. The Castle which is 1,200 years old is a key place of interest in Iznajar as is the parts of the fortified town-walls, a similar scenario to Chester in the United Kingdom. The Arabic name for Iznajar was Hins (castle) and Ashar (happy) named after the Moorish castle which dominates the town. Even though the town was a fortified town there is evidence that a theatre used to be located here as one square is named Patio de las Comdeias.
The most interesting districts of Iznajar is the Barrio del Coso which is a maze of whitewashed Andalucian houses and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Also close to here there is a barrio of cave dwellings known as El Cagancheulo.
Iznajar is part of the prime pork production region and the local cuisine offered in the numerous restaurants and tapas bars reflects this.
Many local specialties are offered, particularly the local traditional pork sausages which are stuffed with eggs, bread, jamon and turkey breast.
During the Semana Santa (Easter Week) which is the most important festival in Iznajar, the locals join together to present the Religious Theatrical Epic in which amateur actors take on the roles of people in key scenes from the Easter Story and the crucifixion.
On the day of San Marcos which is April 25th, the locals all leave town for a big picnic in the countryside at Valdearenas which is a recreational area close to the reservoir. Iznajar has been a big attraction for tourists and those wishing to start a new life in Inland Andalucia.
