The historical and famous city of Granada is located 738 metres above sea level, at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range where The River Beiro, Darro and Genil join. The approximate population of Granada is over 240,000 inhabitants, ranked as the 13th largest area of Spain. It is the capital of the province of Granada and is situated in the Eastern part of Andalucia.
The key historical building of the Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace is one of the most famous monuments from the Moorish occupancy of Spain.
Granada has been a key historical city throughout the centuries and has been inhabited as far back as the last century BC when the Celt Iberians created a settlement here.
Over the centuries, Granada was inhabited by the Greeks, Romans, and Visigoths Moors and was recaptured by the Spanish in 1492.
During the Roman rule the city was called Illiberis, although it was not an important city in the Roman Kingdom. After the fall of the Roman Empire the Visigoths took over the city, it grew in importance during this time so much so it even minted its own coins. The Jewish community established itself during this period in an area called Garnata and it was their help that the Arabs conquested Granada in 713. Granada continued to flourish and grow during this period with different dynasties taking power in succession. It was under the dynasty of Nazari that the famous Alhambra was built and the old town of Granada called Albacin was constructed.
In 1493 Granada was recaptured by the troops of Ferdinand and Isabella. Under the terms of the surrender Muslims were allowed to stay and live in Granada. However a few later when a new Archbishop was installed it was decided to force Muslims to be baptized and convert. High taxes were enforced for Muslims many left and the remaining converted to Catholicism although many continued to practice Islam in secret. In 1492 the Jewish community was expelled and their quarters were demolished to make way for Christian institutions. For the next three centuries form the gold that was imported form the new continent.
In addition to the Alhambra, there are numerous churches, places of interests as well as parks and gardens to enjoy in the city.
The older parts of the city are the Albacin and Alhambra and are a myriad of narrow streets ad boast beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
The newer parts of the city are situated in the lower area of the city and this is where the Cathedral is found.
The city saw in 2006 the opening of the new Granada - Jaen International Airport which can be found next to the A92 dual carriageway, this has of course influenced greatly the number of visitors to the city as well as the number of foreigners choosing the Granada area to purchase property.
