Fuente de Piedra is a small village located in the province of Malaga just off the A92 dual carriageway and 10 minutes from Antequera.
It's name derives from the Fountain of Stone which today is located in the centre, from this fountain it was said that the mineral water that emanated from it had curing qualities for various ailments and many centuries ago, made Fuente de Piedra very well known for this to the point that the water was exported to many points of the country as well as to foreign lands.
Fuente de Piedra considering its size of no more than 2,500 inhabitants is firmly placed in the map and has been visited by many tourists over the years. It is home to the famous Flamingo Lake where many television crews have made programs over the years. Flamingo Lake is a salt plain which during the rainy season is fully of water and a great attraction to many spices of wild life as well to large packs of Flamingo's on their way to North Africa, as part of nature conservation and for accurate records, all the Flamingo's are tagged and a close record to their numbers is kept. There is an observatory point as well as an information centre on the edge of the lake, in addition to this, it is possible to cycle along the paths around the lake, you can bring your own bike or you can hire them from the information centre for very reasonable prices.
In addition to the Flamingo Lake, Fuente de Piedra is also famous for its Donkey Sanctuary, run by an expat family who have rescued donkeys from many parts of Spain. Formerly used to house horses, it currently counts with 18 stables on a plot of land of 15 acres and currently is home to approximately 100 donkeys and mules.
Fuente de Piedra is very accessible to and from many points of Andalucia, it has its own train station as well as regular buses to and from Antequera, it is ideally situated within close proximity from Colonia de Santa Ana, the stop for the AVE (High Speed Train) connecting Malaga to Madrid.
Fuente de Piedra today remains a traditional Spanish village with all comodities and facilities of the 21st century such as shops, supermarkets, a good range of bars and quality restaurants as well as good local medical facilities.
