The Costa del Sol, probably the best known destination for those wishing to have a relaxing or fun-packed holiday as well as for those wishing to relocate to a new life in the sun.
Historically there has been evidence of life on the Costa del Sol for many thousands of years, a good example of this is the cave paintings found in the caves near Nerja in the eastern region of the Costa del Sol. The Phoenicians were visiting the Southern and Eastern parts of Spain when they founded the city of Malaga. Later on, the Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula and the evidence can still be seen in the region today, for example, the aqueducts, temples and fortifications. There is a story that the Roman emperor Julius Caesar visited the Costa del Sol and was very much taken by the delights of the Costa del Sol.
The next influential invaders were the Moors and in 8 AD they conquered the Costa del Sol. During this time there was great progress in the region, such as irrigation systems and monuments like the Alhambra in Granada and the Alcazaba in Malaga. The Moors were expelled in 1492 by the Spanish Christians.
During the 1950s the Costa del Sol became a popular resort attracting famous stars such as Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner and Marlon Brando. European royalty also visited the Costa del Sol, particularly to the resort of Puerto Banus.
In 1962 the first flights connected the Costa del Sol with the rest of Europe and with the herald of budget airlines the Costa del Sol continued to be popular and attracted a wider range of tourists and the rest as they say is history!

The main and best known airport on the Costa del Sol and surrounding areas is Malaga International Airport which is located on the outskirts of Malaga city. From there you can access the various points of Costa del Sol via public transport as well as by taxi or pick up a hire car in Malaga Airport itself.
