Cordoba is located in the Southern region of Spain's Andalucia on the Guadalquivir River; it was established in Roman times as Corduba by Claudius Marcellis. Its population exceed 330, 000 inhabitants. During the Roman occupation Cordoba became the Capital of the Roman province Hispania Ulterior Baetica. It was an important port and traded in olive oil and supplies form the local mines. During this period Cordoba boasted more cultural buildings than Rome such as Roman Temple and a Roman Bridge. The remains of the Roman temple built by Claudius Marcellis, the Roman Bridge and other Roman remains can still be found around the city today.
Cordoba was conquered by the Moors in 711 and the Moorish Architectural influences can be seen distinctively right across the city. During the Islamic reign, Cordoba was renamed Qurtuba and the population grew to more than a quarter of a million and there were more than 1000 Mosques and 600 public baths. During the Moors reign Cordoba developed at an amazing rate and became the most important city in the world. Cordoba also took the illustrious title of becoming the centre for politics, culture and arts. It was the first city to have street lighting and indoor plumbing. Numerous public baths were built during the Moorish rule and these were very popular with the local population. Also during this time Muslims, Jews and Christian lived peacefully alongside each other. Jews established a string community in Cordoba and benefited form Cordoba's growth and wealth as it developed. A Jewish quarter was established and to give thanks to Cordoba the Jewish community gifted Cordoba with Moises Maimonides.
The most important legacy left by the Moors is the former Mosque and is said to be the third largest Mosque in the world, it is known as La Mesquita. In 1236 the Spanish recaptured Cordoba, this was led by Ferdinand III who ordered the building of a Cathedral in the middle of the Mesquita complex. He also ordered the building of numerous churches and many of these can still be seen today.
The city of Cordoba today is a city of great monumental wealth, having been declared a part of Humanities Heritage during the 1990's with art and history to be found in every alleyway, patio and square.
