The town of Coin is situated in the Guadalhorce valley approximately 25 minutes from Marbella; its immediate neighbours are Monda, Alhaurin el Grande and Mijas Pueblo.
Over the past two decades, Coin has seen a major increase in its population which stands at around 24,000 inhabitants.
The first settlement in Coin was created by the Turdetanos who were an Iberian tribe. During the Roman conquest the town was called Lacibis and was constructed out of marble form the local quarries. This development continued until the Roman retreat and the area came under Visigoth rule, when the town was deserted. In 713 the Arabs took control of the town and during the Moorish rule the town was restored to its former glory and names it Cohine, which means pleasant paradise. The Moors ruled for 500 years and the agricultural trade flourished during this time. The irrigation systems that were established during this period still remains today and is still an effective way of watering the crops.
Coin was re-captured by Fernando V in 1485 and under Spanish rule the town became a centre for oils and wines. Local stories say that Christopher Columbus was involved in the re-capture of Coin by the Spanish and the town was visited by Captain Cook in 1829.
In 1925 although Coin is still considered to be a village King Alfonso XIII bestowed the title of a city to Coin.
In more recent years, the area's main economy revolves predominantly around farming and in past years in construction. Coin's infrastructure has vastly improved from its days as a rural town and there are currently some very ambitious plans which will certainly put Coin in a very predominant area on the map, these include a new bypass, new hospital as well as new schools. Over the years, Coin has seen new supermarkets as well as one of the only Inland Shopping Centre called La Trocha which houses many well known names as well as a cinema, a supermarket and a covered parking area where each Sunday many expats meet and hold a car boot sale. In the centre of the town in the main plaza, where the parish church can be found and the new town hall is located on another plaza. The town hall has responded to the influx of foreigners to the town by opening a Department for Foreign Residents which offers help and advice for those who require it. The town of Coin is full of narrow, winding streets with a good selection of shops.
Coin plays host once a year to the largest horse breeding show in Spain which attracts a large number of visitors to the town. Another dubious claim to Coin's fame is that the film set of the BBC soap El Dorado is based just a short drive away form Coin! This set is till used today by Spanish film makers and visitors can look around this large film set.
The new road connecting Coin to Marbella was a big instigator for many expatriates wishing to relocate as it made Marbella a short commuting distance and put Coin firmly on the map.
This increase in population to the area brought a lot of employment particularly in the building sector and associated industries and many new villas sprung up as well as many of the older houses seeing a major restoration. From what used to be a relatively cheap area, it quickly became an expensive area due to its proximity to the coastal areas and commuting distance to Marbella, prices over the past couple of years have leveled off and Coin is certainly a location worth looking at when searching for a rural property in Spain.
Las Delicias Coin is an urbanisation which is made up of large luxurious villas and is accessed off the main newly built road connecting Coin and Alhaurin El Grande. Las Delicias is very well maintained and while driving around the urbanisation it gives the visitor the impression of driving around a quiet neighbourhood. There are a number of villas for sale in Las Delicias, most have large gardens and private swimming pools, in the case in which a villa for sale in Las Delicias does not have a private pool, there is generally plenty of space to build one and it will of course reflect on the sale price.
