Campillos is an Inland Andalucia town located equidistant from Malaga, Granada, Cordoba and Seville.
Campillos has been an important town for cattle farming, leather and mining dating back to Roman Times.
During archaeological digs in the vicinity of Campillos, Roman architecture and coins, as well as brass busts of Octavius, Claudius, Constantine and Trajan were discovered.
Like many of the towns in the area Campillos was occupied by the Moors for a period of time and when the Spanish re-conquested it the town was nearly destroyed.
In the 21st Century, Campillos is a good sized rural town with a population of approximately 8,000 inhabitants with many of its traditions still being maintained. Good public transport links to Malaga and Antequera as well as a modern road network means that Campillos is a very accessible town.
The geography and surroundings are mainly flat, it is considered to be part of the Antequera plains. The recent opening of the high-speed rail link connecting Malaga to Madrid has put Campillos firmly on the map; the stop for the AVE (High Speed Train) is located in Colonia de Santa Ana which is a short distance from Campillos.
Within the town you will find all amenities such as supermarkets, good range of shops as well as bars and restaurants adorning the streets.
The square in the centre of Campillos is a great meeting point and a popular setting for locals having a wonder and enjoying an ice cream during the warm summer evenings.
The parish church the Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Senora del Reposa is located in the central plaza and is a beautiful church to visit. The impressive bell tower which was built by Father Miguel de Santisimo Sacramento is another tourist attraction in the town.
In the countryside surrounding Campillos are the nearby Fuente de las Piedra, which are a series of lagoons filled with sea water.
The patron Saint of the village San Benito is honoured by the village very year in July and the locals celebrate their fiesta in the first two weeks of August.
A local food specialty worth trying when visiting the town is Porra Campillera which is a dryish soup or stew with tuna, eggs and ham.
Just outside the town is the largest go-kart track and only international track in Spain know as Karting Campillos. This track offers visitors a great experience and is a fantastic place to visit with a group of friends as a mini grand prix can be organised for you.
There is also the company Andalucian Auctions SL which holds weekly auctions on a Saturday selling both new and second hand products. Visiting here can allow you to buy a bargain and furniture your house in the sun.

The climate in Campillos is hot in the summer and a few degrees cooler than coastal resorts in the winter; generally the atmospheric conditions are dry which makes the summer heat a little more bearable.
