Andalucia whose name originates from the Arabic Al-Andalus is the highest populated region out of the 17 Autonomous communities of Spain; in 2009, it had a population of 8.25 million inhabitants.
The autonomous community of Andalucia which is situated in the Southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula and is divided into 8 provinces, Huelva, Seville, Cadiz, Cordoba, Malaga, Jaen, Granada and Almeria, the capital city of Andalucia is Seville.
Pablo Picasso was born in this region, in the city of Malaga. The region inspired many of his famous works and the museum dedicated to him is one the most popular tourist attractions. Also his place of birth has been preserved and is open to visitors. Another famous painter Velazquez was born in this area, in the city of Seville during the 17th century. The region of Andalucia was also an area where writers such as Ernest Hemmingway and Laurie Lee found inspiration and both of them made many visits to the region.
Andalusia was the center of power in medieval Muslim-dominated Iberia. Besides Muslim or "Moorish" influences, the region's history and culture have been influenced by the earlier Iberians, Carthaginians,Greeks, Roman Empire, Vandals, Visigoths-all of whom preceded the Muslims and of course, the Castilian and other Christian North Iberian nationalities who conquered the area in the latter phases of the Reconquista.
There is a legend that tells the story that the inhabitants of El Andalus asked Allah for five favours which were, blue skies, seas full of fish, trees abundant with fruit, beautiful women and a fair process of government. The story goes that Allah granted the people of Al Andalus all of them apart from the last one, as he said that otherwise the kingdom would become an unearthly paradise!
Throughout Andalucia you will find an enormous contrast of landscapes from very high mountain ranges such as the Sierras Nevadas in Granada to the plains of Antequera and the flat regions of Seville.
