Historically the area that Almerimar is located in known as El Ejida, can be traced as far back as Palaeolithic era. The Iberians, Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs all settled here and there are many reminders of this history in the area such as towers, forts and citadels.
Originally the area was known as Campo de Dalas, this was changed in 1983 to the municipality of Ejida which was one of the richest Andalucian areas. This municipality incorporated the areas of Almerimar, Balerma, Guardia Viejas, Las Norias, Pampanico, Matagorda, Santa Maria del Aguila, San Agustin, and Tarambana. The area covers 240 square kilometres, with 27kilometres of beach.
Almerimar is in the province of Almeria in the South East of the Spanish Peninsula and is bordered by the provinces of Granada and Murcia.
The population in Almeria province is in the region of 78,000, which is double the number that there were 20 years ago.
The area's economy has really benefitted from the large number of greenhouses in the area which has not only brought work to the region but has also ensured that fresh fruit and vegetables are available locally all year round.
The subtropical climate has given Almerimar the title of the city with the most sun in a year, 3100 hours per year. Also due to its geographical location, the area has been used as a backdrop for many Westerns and there are still film sets to visit.
Almerimar is one of Spain's best kept secrets. It is located in the province of Almeria, 30 kilometres form the capital of the province Almeria and 192 kilometres form Malaga. Both of these cities have good transport links, including regular flights to many locations in the U.K. In the region of Almeria, you can be on the beach in the morning and skiing 2 hours later in the Sierra Nevada.

The city of Almerimar is an area of real natural beauty and the marina is at the heart of it. The marina was built in 1978 and has space for up to 1,100 moorings, up to 30 metres in length. The marina offers visitors fantastic facilities and has an average 2500 moorings a year in the 4 docks. Many of the owners live onboard their boats during he winter time and the facilities that are available for them include a local radio transmission. These broadcasts include daily weather forecast sand there is also information program for English residents. Other facilities include power, fresh water, Wi-Fi, a re-fuelling station and a ship yard. Either side of the marina are miles of unspoilt beaches, which have been awarded Blue Flag status. Watersports that are available for visitors include windsurfing, scuba diving and sailing.
The natural park of Punta Entinas, a large expanse of salt marshland to the east of Almerimar, offers bird watcher the chance to see many different species of birds including flamingos and ducks.
Other sporting opportunities in the area include golf. The Almerimar Golf Club which was designed by Gary Player and offers players wide tree lined fairways, with large and well maintained greens, and a fast game.
Nearby there is also the Campo de Golf club, which is one of the most popular courses in Almeria. It was designed by Gary Player in 1976 and combines water hazards and palm tree lined fairways. Originally it had 18 holes until in 2005 this was increased by 9 holes to 27. The greens and bunkers sizes were also increased in size as well as the distance between each tee and hole.
Prices of houses are cheaper than further down the coast, whilst offering the buyer a chance to buy a property in an area of outstanding beauty near a stunning coastline.
