Alhaurin el Grande is Located 13km from Mijas Pueblo and approximately equidistant from the coastal town of Fuengirola.
There are various rumours as to the origin of the name Alhaurin el Grande, one of those being a derivative from the Arabic Allah's Big Garden, this has not been confirmed or denied. There has is evidence of a settlement here at Alhaurin going back to the Neolithic period. The location of Alhaurin being at the base of the Sierra de Mijas and in the fertile Guadalhorce Valley attracted great growth during the Roman Occupation. Many new villas were built during this period many people were drawn to the area because of the fertile soil and mineral deposits, remains of these houses can still be seen today. Recently at the Fuente Del Sol three Roman columns were discovered and these can be visited today
During the Moors occupation of the area they continued the development of farming in this area and evidence from this period can still be seen today in the form of the 12th Century Arcos de Cobertizo.
Over the centuries this town has been occupied by many different forces and this area was occupied by French troops during the Peninsula Wars.
Over the past decade or so, Alhaurin el Grande has seen a mass influx of foreigners who have relocated to the area due to its unspoiled nature, lovely surroundings, great accessibility from Malaga Airport as well as many of the coastal resorts. Going back a number of years, fincas and rural properties in the area where extremely cheap, however, due to the increase in demand for property, prices rose sharply and numerous new developments sprung up.
Alhaurin El Grande is very well placed for those interested in Golfing in Spain, Alhaurin Golf is set in gorgeous surroundings and is a par 72 course designed by Seve Ballesteros, and it is located just off the roundabout approximately 3km from Alhaurin el Grande at the crossroads towards Fuengirola and Mijas Pueblo. The other golf course within striking distance from Alhaurin el Grande is Lauro Golf; this is a 27 hole course which is located on the A404 Alhaurin el Grande to Alhaurin de La Torre road, the course was designed by the late Folco Nardi.
